US President Donald Trump has expressed strong disapproval of BRICS, calling the group’s creation "for a bad purpose." He emphasized that many countries in the bloc no longer support it. Trump declared, "BRICS is dead," adding that the nations involved would face severe economic consequences if they attempted to replace the US dollar.
Trade Consequences for BRICS Nations
During a briefing on Thursday, Trump warned BRICS countries about the repercussions of "playing games" with the dollar. He made it clear that the US would not trade with these countries if they pursued any moves to undermine the dollar’s role in global trade. Furthermore, he threatened to impose a 100% tariff on any such trade. Trump stated, "If they want to play games with the dollar, they’re going to be hit with a 100% tariff."
BRICS Members’ Fear of Retaliation
Trump's comments reflected his belief that BRICS countries were afraid to continue discussions about de-dollarization. "They don't even want to talk about it anymore," he said, highlighting how these countries are hesitant to admit their BRICS membership due to the potential consequences of challenging the US dollar.
Trump’s Strong Warning on De-Dollarization
Earlier this year, Trump reiterated his stance on the issue through a post on Truth Social. He warned that BRICS countries would face 100% tariffs if they tried to create a new currency or promote any currency to replace the US dollar. "There is no chance that BRICS will replace the US dollar," Trump declared, warning that countries attempting this would face serious consequences.
The US Holds Leverage Over BRICS
Trump also rejected claims that the US is in a vulnerable position, referencing former President Joe Biden’s statement. He confidently said, "We have them over a barrel," stressing that BRICS nations would not succeed in challenging the US dollar's dominance. Trump’s remarks echoed his previous warnings before becoming president.
BRICS’ Push for De-Dollarization
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin and BRICS foreign ministers have pushed for de-dollarization, advocating for the expansion of national currencies in international transactions. However, Trump's position remains clear: any attempt to undermine the US dollar would result in harsh economic penalties for BRICS countries.
