Delhi Capitals (DC) secured their first victory of the TATA Women’s Premier League 2025 with a dramatic two-wicket win over Mumbai Indians (MI) in Match 2. The match, held at the BCA Stadium in Vadodara, saw DC chase down a target of 164 in a nerve-wracking final ball finish.
DC’s Key Contributions
To start, debutant Niki Prasad played a pivotal role, contributing 35 runs off 33 balls. Alongside her, Alice Capsey added 21 runs from 10 balls. Radha Yadav also made an important contribution with an unbeaten 9* off 4 balls. As the game neared its end, DC needed two runs from the final delivery, and Arundhati Reddy narrowly avoided being run out, allowing DC to secure the win.
MI Sets a Challenging Target
Earlier, Mumbai Indians posted a strong total of 164, with Natalie Sciver-Brunt leading the charge. She scored an unbeaten 80* off 59 balls, while Harmanpreet Kaur added 42 runs off 22 balls. On the other hand, Shafali Verma gave DC a solid foundation for the chase with a quick 43 off 18 balls.
Pandey and Sutherland Shine with the Ball
After winning the toss, DC captain Meg Lanning chose to bowl first. Shikha Pandey struck early, dismissing Hayley Matthews with a sharp catch from Lanning. Not long after, Pandey returned to bowl out Yastika Bhatia, reducing MI to 41/2 after the powerplay. Harmanpreet Kaur fought back with a quick-fire 42, and in doing so, she became only the second Indian player to reach 8000 T20 runs.
DC’s Chase Starts Strong
In reply, Shafali Verma dominated early, hitting 43 runs off 18 balls. Consequently, DC scored 60 runs during the powerplay. However, MI quickly turned the game around, taking three quick wickets. Verma, Lanning, and Jemimah Rodrigues all fell, leaving DC at 76/4 after 9 overs.
Capsey and Prasad Keep DC Alive
Despite the early setbacks, Alice Capsey and Niki Prasad kept DC's chase on track. They rotated the strike effectively, but MI’s bowlers kept the boundary scoring in check. As a result, DC was left to score 44 runs from the last four overs. However, Sarah Bryce’s 21 runs off 10 balls and Prasad's steady contribution brought the equation down to 21 runs needed from 12 balls.
Exciting Finish
As the match came to a close, DC needed 10 runs from the final over. Prasad struck a boundary off the first ball, but she was caught out on the very next ball. With two runs still needed off the final two deliveries, Yadav and Arundhati Reddy ran hard to complete the runs, sealing the win for DC.
