ICC Champions Trophy 2025 Kicks Off with Pakistan vs New Zealand
Pakistan will host the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, marking the return of a major international cricket event after nearly 30 years.
The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is finally set to begin on Wednesday. Pakistan, the host and defending champion, will take on New Zealand in the opening match at National Stadium, Karachi. After an eight-year break, the 50-over tournament is making a much-anticipated comeback. Only eight teams qualified based on their 2023 ODI World Cup rankings. Surprisingly, Sri Lanka failed to qualify for the first time, while Afghanistan will make its debut.

A Historic Moment for Pakistan

For the first time since 1996, Pakistan will host a major ICC event. This is a significant moment for the country, as it welcomes top cricket teams back to its stadiums. However, due to political reasons, India will play all its matches in the UAE under a hybrid model. Whenever Pakistan and India face off, their match will also take place in the UAE. Despite this neutral venue, the excitement for their clash remains high.

Cricket Returns to Pakistan

For years, Pakistan struggled to host international matches. The situation worsened after the 2009 terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan team in Lahore. As a result, foreign teams refused to tour Pakistan for nearly a decade. Fortunately, in 2019, the Sri Lankan Test team returned, slowly reviving international cricket in the country. Now, with the Champions Trophy, Pakistan is finally ready to welcome world-class cricket once again.

What is the ICC Champions Trophy?

The ICC Champions Trophy is a 50-over tournament featuring eight teams. The last edition was played in 2017, where Pakistan defeated India in England. Initially launched in 1998, the tournament was held every two years. Later, it switched to a four-year cycle between World Cups. For the 2025 edition, the groups are: Group A: Pakistan, India, New Zealand, Bangladesh Group B: England, South Africa, Australia, Afghanistan

Challenges and Relocations in the Past

Over the years, the Champions Trophy has faced multiple challenges. Pakistan was originally scheduled to host the 2008 edition, but due to security concerns, the tournament was moved to South Africa in 2009. Similarly, India was supposed to host the 2021 edition, but it was replaced with the T20 World Cup, which was held in the UAE. Now, after years of delays and relocations, Pakistan finally gets its chance to host in 2025. This marks a major milestone for cricket in the country, bringing excitement to millions of fans.
