India started their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign with a dominant six-wicket victory over Bangladesh in Dubai. Thanks to Mohammed Shami’s fiery spell and Shubman Gill’s unbeaten century, India comfortably chased down the target. Shami’s five-wicket haul restricted Bangladesh to 228, and Gill’s eighth ODI hundred sealed the win.
Shami and Rana Wreck Bangladesh’s Batting
From the very beginning, Bangladesh struggled. After opting to bat first, they lost three wickets in the first two overs. Mohammed Shami (5/53) and debutant Harshit Rana (3/31) dominated the top order, reducing Bangladesh to 35/5.
However, Towhid Hridoy fought back, scoring 100 off 118 balls. He built a much-needed 154-run partnership with Jaker Ali (68), helping Bangladesh recover. Eventually, they reached 228 before being bowled out in the final over.
Meanwhile, Shami stood out, claiming his sixth ODI five-wicket haul. Moreover, he became the seventh Indian bowler to reach 200 ODI wickets.
Gill Anchors India’s Chase
In response, India started aggressively. Rohit Sharma (41 off 36) gave the team a strong foundation. However, he fell to Taskin Ahmed, giving Bangladesh a brief moment of hope.
Even so, Shubman Gill (101) took control* of the chase. He built steady partnerships with Virat Kohli (22) and Shreyas Iyer (15). Although wickets fell at regular intervals, Gill remained composed and reached his century in 125 balls.
Towards the end, KL Rahul (41) accelerated the scoring* and finished the match with a six. Rishad Hossain (2/38) performed well, but Bangladesh’s total was simply not enough to challenge India.
Gill Named Player of the Match
Without a doubt, Shubman Gill’s brilliant innings earned him the Player of the Match award. India’s commanding win in their opening game set a strong tone for the rest of the Champions Trophy 2025.
