UP Warriorz secured a thrilling 4-run win over RCB in the first-ever Super Over of TATA WPL history. Sophie Ecclestone played a match-winning role, scoring 33 off 19 balls before holding her nerve in the decisive Super Over.
Ellyse Perry’s Heroics in Vain
Despite Ellyse Perry’s brilliant knock, RCB suffered their second consecutive loss. She remained unbeaten on 90 off 56 balls, helping RCB post a strong 180/6. However, her efforts were not enough as UPW sealed back-to-back wins.
Explosive Start for UP Warriorz
Chasing 181, UP Warriorz began aggressively. Kiran Navgire smashed 24 off 12 balls, hitting four boundaries and a six. However, Renuka Singh Thakur struck early, dismissing Navgire and then removing Vrinda Dinesh cheaply.
Meanwhile, Sneh Rana, making her RCB debut, made an immediate impact. She dismissed Tahlia McGrath with a sharp stumping in her first over. By the end of the powerplay, UPW stood at 57/3. Then, Captain Deepti Sharma counterattacked with quick boundaries but soon fell to Rana, who finished with 3/27.
RCB Strikes Back
As the innings progressed, Grace Harris and Shweta Sehrawat attempted to rebuild. However, Kim Garth (2/40) dismissed Harris, caught at long-on, reducing UPW to 103/5. Shortly after, Uma Chetry and Sehrawat stitched a brief partnership, but RCB struck again. Rana removed Uma, and Perry dismissed Sehrawat (31 off 25) on the very next ball.
With 56 needed from 30 balls, Chinelle Henry walked in and smashed a six. But, just when UPW looked to gain momentum, Garth struck again, clean bowling her to keep the game in balance.
Ecclestone’s Late Fireworks Force Super Over
RCB seemed in control, yet Ecclestone (33 off 19) and Saima Thakor (14 off 8) had other plans. With 18 needed off the final over, Ecclestone smashed two sixes and a boundary off Renuka. Consequently, with two runs required from two balls, a tense bye attempt resulted in a run-out, tying the scores and forcing a Super Over.
Super Over Drama
For the Super Over, Grace Harris and Chinelle Henry batted for UPW against Kim Garth. Garth bowled brilliantly, conceding only 8 runs and dismissing Henry.
Needing 9 runs to win, RCB sent Smriti Mandhana and Richa Ghosh to bat. However, Ecclestone, entrusted with the ball, executed her plans perfectly. She gave away only 4 runs, sealing a famous victory for UP Warriorz.
RCB’s Strong First Innings Effort
Earlier, UPW won the toss and opted to bowl. Danni Wyatt-Hodge set the tone for RCB, hitting an early six. However, Deepti Sharma struck in the fourth over, dismissing Smriti Mandhana (6 off 9).
Ellyse Perry took charge, smashing quick boundaries. She built a solid 94-run stand with Wyatt-Hodge, who scored 57 off 41 balls. Meanwhile, Perry reached her third fifty of the season in just 36 balls. Soon after, Wyatt-Hodge celebrated her maiden WPL half-century with a six off Ecclestone.
However, McGrath broke the partnership by dismissing Wyatt-Hodge. Then, Richa Ghosh started strong but soon fell to Henry’s bouncer. Deepti also removed Kanika Ahuja with a sharp run-out. Despite these setbacks, Perry launched a late assault, smashing 16 runs in the 19th over and remaining unbeaten on 90 off 56 balls.
In the final over, Ecclestone bowled brilliantly, conceding just 6 runs. That crucial over proved to be the turning point in UPW’s stunning comeback.
