A Southwest Airlines pilot aborted landing at the last moment to avoid a collision at Chicago Midway International Airport. The incident occurred on Tuesday morning when a private jet unexpectedly entered the runway without clearance, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
Authorities Launch Investigation
Shortly after the event, the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) began investigating. The incident, which happened at 8:50 am local time, was captured on video and quickly went viral on social media. The footage shows Southwest Flight 2504 approaching the runway when a white private jet suddenly appears in its path.

Pilot’s Swift Action Prevents Crash
As soon as the private jet became visible, the Southwest pilot reacted immediately. Without delay, the pilot aborted the landing and rapidly ascended, preventing a possible collision. The private jet was preparing for takeoff at the same time. According to Southwest Airlines, the crew performed a go-around before safely landing later.
Miscommunication Caused the Close Call
Reports reveal that the Southwest aircraft was just 50 feet from the ground before pulling up. The private jet, a Bombardier Challenger 350, was set to fly to Knoxville, Tennessee. However, the pilot misinterpreted air traffic control instructions and mistakenly entered the runway. Despite at least nine warnings from controllers, the private jet did not stop.
Rising Concerns Over Aviation Safety
This near-miss raises further concerns about aviation safety. Last month, a midair collision between an Army helicopter and a passenger jet claimed 67 lives. With more incidents occurring, officials now face pressure to strengthen safety protocols and enhance pilot communication.
