Indian Super League 2024-25: FC Goa Strengthens Semi-Final Hopes with Win Over Punjab FC
FC Goa secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Punjab FC, strengthening their hold on second place in the Indian Super League 2024-25.

FC Goa secured a 1-0 win over Punjab FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi in the Indian Super League 2024-25. Consequently, this victory gave them 45 points from 22 matches, strengthening their hold on second place. They now have a strong chance of reaching the semi-finals directly. Meanwhile, the Gaurs lead Bengaluru FC and Jamshedpur FC, both at 37 points. However, Jamshedpur FC have three games left to close the gap. On the other hand, Punjab FC remain in 11th place with 24 points from 22 matches.

Strong Start by FC Goa

Right from the beginning, FC Goa played with determination. They moved the ball smoothly in open play and set-pieces. In the eighth minute, they executed a well-planned corner kick. Borja Herrera’s accurate cross found Odei Onaindia at the far post. Instead of shooting, Onaindia headed the ball to Carl McHugh. However, Punjab FC goalkeeper Muheet Shabir Khan anticipated well and made a crucial save in the ninth minute.

Breaking the Deadlock

Eventually, McHugh broke the deadlock just before halftime. Udanta Singh delivered a long throw-in as McHugh sprinted into Punjab FC’s penalty area. He struck the ball with his left foot into the bottom left corner, giving FC Goa the lead at halftime.

Punjab FC's Response

After the break, Punjab FC started aggressively. They pressed hard in the first 15 minutes. In the 57th minute, Ricky Shabong attempted a long-range shot after a throw-in. However, FC Goa’s goalkeeper Hrithik Tiwari reacted quickly and made a composed save.

Continued Attacks by Punjab FC

Despite their efforts, Punjab FC kept trying long shots. In the 64th minute, Petros Giakoumakis retrieved a loose ball, turned sharply, and fired a powerful strike. The ball barely missed the top right corner. Furthermore, in the 72nd minute, Giakoumakis set up Tekcham Singh outside the box. Singh, instead of passing, attempted a long shot. FC Goa’s defense blocked the attempt in time, denying Punjab FC another opportunity.

Late Efforts to Equalize

Until the final moments, Punjab FC pushed for an equalizer. In the 87th minute, Ninthoinganba Meetei and Khaiminthang Lhungdim got close to goal. Lhungdim struck with his left foot, but the ball flew high and wide, summing up a frustrating night for Punjab FC.

Key Performer of the Match

Carl McHugh played a crucial role in FC Goa’s victory. He completed 59 of 73 passes, made a tackle, a clearance, and three interceptions. Most importantly, he scored the winning goal.

What’s Next for Both Teams?

Looking ahead, FC Goa will face Mohammedan SC on March 4. Meanwhile, Punjab FC will take on Hyderabad FC on March 6.
