‘We Will Decide Our Future’: Greenland PM Slams Trump’s Remarks
Greenland’s Prime Minister Mute Egede criticized Trump for disrespecting Greenlanders and reaffirmed the island’s right to decide its own future

Greenland's Prime Minister, Mute Egede, has criticized U.S. President Donald Trump for not showing proper respect to the people of Greenland. He stated that Trump’s renewed push to integrate the mineral-rich Arctic island into the United States has been met with disapproval from Greenlanders.

Egede emphasized that the people of Greenland deserve respect, something he believes Trump has failed to provide. He noted that due to Trump’s actions, the island’s residents are reluctant to strengthen ties with the U.S. He firmly reiterated that Greenland, with its small population of 57,000, belongs to its people and that they alone should decide its future.

Greenland’s Autonomy and U.S. Interest

Greenland is an autonomous territory under Denmark. However, since Trump returned to office, he has frequently promised prosperity to the island. He has offered large investments, job creation, and economic growth in an attempt to persuade Greenlanders to align with the U.S.

Trump’s Promise to Greenland

On Monday, Trump addressed the issue on Truth Social, asserting that the U.S. would continue safeguarding Greenland. He wrote, "We will continue to keep you safe, as we have since World War II. We are ready to invest billions of dollars to create new jobs and make you rich." Despite these assurances, Egede remains unconvinced. He expressed disappointment in Trump’s approach, stating, "We deserve to be treated with respect, and I don't think the U.S. president has done that recently since he took office. I think that the recent things the American president has been doing mean that people don't want to get as close to (the U.S.) as they might have wanted in the past."

Greenland's Stand on International Relations

Egede stressed the need for Greenland to focus on relationships with nations that respect its sovereignty and long-term vision. "We need to draw a line in the sand and put more effort into cultivating relations with the countries that show us respect for the future we want to build," he added. Greenland’s strategic location makes it valuable, as its capital, Nuuk, is closer to New York than it is to Copenhagen. The island holds vast reserves of minerals, oil, and natural gas but remains underdeveloped.

Trump’s Controversial Statement

Earlier this month, Trump reaffirmed his intent to bring Greenland under U.S. influence. He declared, "We strongly support your right to determine your own future, and if you choose, we welcome you into the United States of America... One way or the other, we're going to get it." His statement has sparked further debate, intensifying Greenland’s resistance to U.S. overtures. The situation highlights ongoing tensions over Greenland’s sovereignty and future direction.
