The US Department of Justice (DOJ) has launched an investigation into Columbia University for allegedly hiding undocumented immigrants. A DOJ official confirmed the probe on Friday. Meanwhile, the Trump administration has intensified efforts to deport foreign nationals involved in pro-Palestinian protests last year.
Federal Agents Search Campus and Make Arrests
Earlier this week, Homeland Security agents searched two university residences with a warrant. However, they did not make any arrests at that time. Additionally, officials did not disclose who they were looking for. Then, on Friday, authorities arrested two individuals connected to the demonstrations.
At the same time, a Columbia doctoral student from India, whose visa was revoked, fled the U.S. on a flight. Meanwhile, federal immigration officers in Newark, New Jersey, arrested a Palestinian woman for overstaying her visa. Previously, she had been detained during university protests in April.
DOJ Official Defends Actions as Part of Anti-Antisemitism Effort
While addressing the press, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche defended the arrests. He claimed they were part of Trump’s broader mission to fight antisemitism. However, he did not present clear evidence against Columbia.
"Just last night, we worked with the Department of Homeland Security to execute search warrants from an investigation into Columbia University for harboring and concealing illegal aliens on its campus," Blanche stated on Friday.
Furthermore, he mentioned that investigators were examining potential civil rights violations and terrorism-related crimes. However, he did not specify whether these accusations were against the university itself or individuals involved in the protests.
Columbia University Responds to Federal Actions
In response, Columbia’s interim President, Katrina Armstrong, reassured students and faculty. She emphasized that the university remains committed to the law.
“I understand the immense stress our community is under,” Armstrong stated. “Despite the unprecedented challenges, Columbia University will remain a place where the pursuit of knowledge is cherished and fiercely protected, where the rule of law and due process is respected and never taken for granted, and where all members of our community are valued and able to thrive.”
Trump Administration Escalates Pressure on Columbia
Recently, the Trump administration has increased scrutiny on Columbia. Just last month, the government revoked $400 million in federal grants and contracts, primarily for medical research. Many believe this move was intended to punish the university for its handling of anti-Israel demonstrations.
Moreover, Trump and other officials have accused the protesters of supporting Hamas. They argue that these demonstrations are linked to the ongoing Gaza war, which began after Hamas launched a surprise attack on southern Israel.
Future Implications for the University
Looking ahead, the administration has threatened even more drastic measures. Specifically, it demands that Columbia alter its admissions policies and place its Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African Studies Department under external control for five years.
Additionally, officials want the university to ban masks on campus, revise how it recruits international students, adopt a new definition of antisemitism, and eliminate its student disciplinary process.
For now, Columbia faces mounting pressure as the investigation continues.
