An improvised explosive device killed two members of the Movement for the Salvation of Azawad (MSA) on Saturday. Their motorbike struck the device while they were escorting a supply convoy to Menaka. As a result, both men lost their lives instantly. The group later confirmed their deaths in a statement.
MSA Reaffirms Support for Mali’s Military
Despite the attack, MSA expressed its continued support for Mali’s military. Furthermore, the group remains active in northern Mali, where separatists claim the territory of Azawad.
Rebels Regroup After Defeat
In November 2023, Mali’s army, with help from Russian mercenaries, defeated rebels in Kidal. Consequently, the fighters fled to the Algerian border. Since then, they have launched renewed attacks from that area.
Mali’s Security Crisis Worsens
Since 2012, armed jihadists linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State have fueled violence across Mali. In addition, criminal gangs have taken advantage of the instability, making the situation even worse.
Junta Struggles to Stop Terrorist Attacks
After coups in 2020 and 2021, a military junta took control, promising to restore order. Moreover, it vowed to eliminate Islamist groups. However, despite increased military efforts and closer ties with Russia, terrorist attacks continue to threaten the country.
