Rachel Zegler’s Snow White Comments Stir Controversy
Disney’s live-action Snow White sparks controversy as Rachel Zegler’s comments and casting divide audiences.

Disney’s live-action Snow White has stirred controversy. Lead actress Rachel Zegler made statements that upset many fans. The new film takes a modern approach, changing key elements from the 1937 animated classic. As a result, Zegler’s comments about these changes have fueled debate.

Rachel Zegler Description of the New Snow White

In an interview with Variety, Zegler explained how this version differs from the original. Instead of focusing on romance, it highlights leadership and self-discovery. Unlike the traditional Snow White, this version portrays her as independent and ambitious.

She stated, “I just mean that it's no longer 1937, and we absolutely wrote a Snow White that's not gonna be saved by the prince, and she's not gonna be dreaming about true love.”

Furthermore, she emphasized that Snow White now follows her own dreams.

She added, “She's dreaming about becoming the leader she knows she can be and the leader that her late father told her she could be if she was fearless, fair, brave, and true. And so, it's just a really incredible story for young people everywhere to see themselves in.”

Zegler’s Comments Cause Controversy

Soon after, Zegler’s remarks spread online and sparked backlash. She described the 1937 version as outdated and criticized its portrayal of the prince. According to Marca, she even referred to him as “a guy who literally stalks her.”

Later, in an interview with ExtraTV, she reinforced her views.

She said, “The original cartoon came out in 1937, and very evidently so. There's a big focus on her love story with a guy who literally stalks her. Weird, weird. So we didn't do that this time. It's an inner journey that she goes on to find her true self and she meets a lot of people along the way that make the journey really incredible.”

As a result, many fans of the original film felt disrespected. They believed Zegler dismissed the impact of the classic movie. In particular, her comparison of the prince to a stalker angered audiences.

Criticism Over Zegler’s Casting

In addition to the backlash over her comments, Zegler also faced criticism for her casting. Many argued that she did not resemble the traditional image of Snow White. Since she is Latina, some people believed she was not the right choice for the role.

As the controversy grew, it took a personal toll. According to Marca, people even showed up near her home and harassed her.

She revealed, “For being brown. For having brown skin. For playing Snow White. There was a lot of harassment from a certain group of people—they were showing up at my apartment and screaming profanities.”

Zegler Stays Positive Despite Backlash

Despite the criticism, Zegler remains excited about playing Snow White. She believes the film still honors the heart of the original story while making it more relatable for modern audiences.

During an interview on Good Morning America, she shared her enthusiasm.

She said, “It was the honor of a lifetime. I think every young person dreams about a phone call like that. This one is certainly extra special as a huge Disney fan.”

Additionally, she expressed gratitude for the opportunity.

She added, “To get to bring her to life in such a unique way and such a special way, it's just a beautiful opportunity, and I'm very honored.”

Snow White: A Fresh Perspective

Overall, the new Snow White reimagines a beloved classic with a fresh perspective. However, Zegler’s comments and casting continue to divide audiences. While some appreciate the modern take, others feel it strays too far from the original. Regardless, the debate surrounding the film remains strong.
