Myanmar Faces More Tremors After Devastating Earthquake
Myanmar suffered more tremors a day after a deadly earthquake, as rescue teams raced to restore services and search for survivors.

Myanmar experienced more tremors on March 29, just a day after a devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake killed over 1,000 people. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported a 5.1-magnitude quake near Naypyidaw at 2:50 pm IST. Meanwhile, India’s National Centre for Seismology (NCS) recorded a lower magnitude of 4.7. Despite the difference, both agencies confirmed the quake struck at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Aftershocks Continue to Shake Myanmar

So far, Myanmar has experienced at least three minor earthquakes on March 29, with magnitudes ranging from 3.6 to 4.7, according to NCS. However, officials have not confirmed any new damage.

Meanwhile, rescue teams are working urgently to repair roads and restore communication lines. Unfortunately, electricity, phone, and internet services remain down across major parts of Naypyidaw.

Death Toll Climbs as Rescue Efforts Continue

According to reports, the earthquake has already claimed at least 1,644 lives. In particular, Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, has suffered the most destruction. Notably, the city is home to 1.5 million people.

As rescue operations continue, Myanmar’s military-led government has warned that the death toll could rise even further. In a statement, officials said, “detailed figures are still being collected.” Earlier, the USGS predicted Myanmar’s casualties could reach up to 10,000.

Earthquake Triggers Skyscraper Collapse in Thailand

Meanwhile, the powerful quake also impacted neighboring Thailand. As a result, an under-construction 33-story skyscraper collapsed in Bangkok, killing at least nine people.

Currently, rescue teams are searching for 47 missing workers, including many from Myanmar. Additionally, Thai officials reported that tremors were felt across most provinces. While northern areas like Chiang Mai suffered damage to buildings, hospitals, and temples, casualties were reported only in Bangkok.
