Mumbai Indians (MI) finally ended their losing streak with a dominant victory over Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Ashwani Kumar's brilliant spell played an important role in this win. MI thrashed the defending champions by eight wickets at Wankhede Stadium on Monday. After suffering two consecutive losses on the road, MI bounced back strongly. As a result, they moved from last place to sixth in the points table.
Ashwani Kumar Impresses on Debut
At the heart of MI’s success was debutant Ashwani Kumar. The left-arm pacer delivered a stunning performance, becoming the first Indian to take four or more wickets on his IPL debut. He finished with outstanding figures of 4/24. Notably, he dismissed KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane with the very first ball of his IPL career. Later, he took the crucial wickets of Rinku Singh, ‘Impact Player’ Manish Pandey, and the explosive Andre Russell.
Meanwhile, MI’s other bowlers also played a key role. Deepak Chahar contributed with 2/19, while Trent Boult (1/23), Hardik Pandya (1/10), Mitchell Santner (1/17), and Vignesh Puthur (1/21) each picked up a wicket. Consequently, KKR collapsed and got bowled out for just 116 runs.
Rickelton and Suryakumar Finish the Job
In response, MI’s batting lineup made the chase look effortless. Opener Ryan Rickelton played a brilliant innings, smashing an unbeaten 62 off 41 balls. Furthermore, Suryakumar Yadav provided the finishing touch with a quick 27 off just nine balls. As a result, MI reached the target with eight wickets in hand and more than seven overs to spare.
Ashwani Kumar: MI’s Latest Rising Star
Over the years, MI has discovered several hidden gems. They have unearthed stars like Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, and more recently, Tilak Varma. Now, Ashwani Kumar has joined that elite list.
The 23-year-old pacer hails from Jhanjeri, a small town near Chandigarh. Interestingly, MI secured him for ₹30 lakh at the mega auction in November. Before his IPL debut, he had played just four T20 matches and a few games in other formats. However, he had never taken more than three wickets in a single match.
His breakthrough came during the Sher-e-Punjab Trophy, a T20 tournament organized by the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA). Playing for Agri King’s Knights, he picked up 11 wickets in six matches at an impressive average of 21.27. Most importantly, his accuracy stood out, which ultimately convinced MI’s scouts to place a successful bid for him during the mega auction in Jeddah.
Overall, Ashwani Kumar has made an exceptional start to his IPL career. With his raw talent and confidence, he could soon become MI’s next big star.
