A massive fire erupted Monday night at a recycling plant in Paris. The site is located near the city’s new sports complex, designed by famous architect Renzo Piano. Thick smoke quickly spread across the city.
Emergency Services Respond Quickly
As a result, at least 200 firefighters and 60 fire trucks rushed to the scene. Crews worked nonstop to contain the flames. Authorities warned residents to avoid the area for safety.
Structure Completely Destroyed
Meanwhile, the fire destroyed the building. "The building is completely gutted and destroyed," said Geoffrey Boulard, mayor of the 17th arrondissement, on BFM television. He confirmed that all workers were safely evacuated.
Fire Originated Underground
Additionally, Boulard explained how the fire spread. "Firefighters arrived very quickly, but the fire happened underground and then spread through the building," he said.
Importantly, the fire occurred next to Paris’s main court complex, known for its glass skyscraper. Italian architect Renzo Piano designed it, and it opened in 2018. The Syctom plant started operating in 2019. According to city officials, it processed household waste for nearly one million people.
Thankfully, No One Was Hurt
Despite the scale of the
fire, there were no injuries. "The most important thing tonight is that a disaster on this scale did not have any human damage," said Corentin Duprey, the plant’s president.
