The second high-voltage showdown between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians (MI) in the IPL 2025 season will take place on Sunday, April 20, at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. This match holds great importance for both sides, especially for MS Dhoni-led CSK, who are still in the race to make it to the playoffs.
Dhoni's Fitness Sparks Concern
All attention will be on MS Dhoni, who is reportedly carrying a knee injury. He was seen limping when he arrived in Mumbai for the match. Dhoni has been struggling with knee problems for the last couple of years, and it seems the issue has returned just before this big encounter.
CSK Struggling This Season
CSK’s journey in this IPL has been far from smooth. They finally managed to break a five-match losing streak by beating Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the second game after Dhoni returned as captain. Despite that, they only have 4 points from 7 matches, and their Net Run Rate (NRR) is the worst in the tournament at -1.276. To reach the playoffs, teams usually need around 16 points. CSK still has a chance if they win all their remaining games, which would take them to 18 points, but that will be a tough task—especially against an in-form MI side.
MI Finding Their Form at the Right Time
Mumbai Indians had a poor start this season. They won only one of their first five games, but now they’ve bounced back with two consecutive wins. Their captain Hardik Pandya has been outstanding with both bat and ball. As of April 18, Pandya is tied for second in the list of highest wicket-takers with 11 wickets, along with Kuldeep Yadav of Delhi Capitals. With the bat, Pandya has a strike rate close to 170, making him a dangerous all-rounder for opponents. CSK will need a solid plan to stop him at Wankhede.
CSK’s Poor Record at Wankhede
Although CSK has generally done well against MI, their record at the Wankhede Stadium isn’t great. It’s MI’s stronghold, and they recently destroyed Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) there—SRH were finalists last year and are known for their powerful batting. CSK and MI have played 12 matches at Wankhede. MI has won 7, while CSK has won 5. However, CSK’s last match at this venue was a memorable one—they beat MI by 20 runs and posted their highest-ever score (206) at this ground. That said, MI was in terrible form that season and finished at the bottom of the table. This year is different—MI is still ahead of CSK in the standings, even if they’ve had some issues. Wankhede’s pitch generally favors batters, but CSK’s batting lineup hasn’t looked threatening. They haven’t successfully chased more than 180 runs since IPL 2019.
Injuries and Form a Worry for CSK
CSK has lost their regular skipper and top-order batter, Ruturaj Gaikwad, to injury. Gaikwad has been a key performer in the last few seasons. Their middle-order batters like Vijay Shankar, Shivam Dube, and Ravindra Jadeja have also failed to make an impact. Historically, this rivalry has been close. Out of 40 matches, MI has won 21, while CSK has won 19. Still, MI leads in the head-to-head count.
Dhoni Can Still Make a Difference
With Dhoni back as captain, you can’t write off CSK completely. He’s looked good with the bat in IPL 2025, scoring 130 runs in 7 innings at a strike rate close to 160. In the last game against LSG, he smashed an unbeaten 26 off 11 balls at a blazing strike rate of 236, guiding CSK to victory.
MI Riding High on Confidence
On the other hand, MI has all the momentum. Pandya recently played a crucial knock—29 off 9 balls—against SRH and helped MI secure a win. If CSK doesn’t fix their issues soon—especially their weak powerplay batting—they may suffer again at Wankhede.
