Nepal held a funeral for 27-year-old Sudeep Neupane, the only foreign national killed in the recent Pahalgam terror attack. The cremation took place at Triveni Ghat in Kalikanagar, Butwal city. His body, wrapped in Nepal’s national flag, travelled through several Indian states before finally reaching Nepal.
Hundreds Gather to Pay Last Respects
Earlier, a huge crowd had gathered before the body arrived. Local leaders and residents stood with the grieving family. Around noon, everyone offered their final prayers. Meanwhile, Sudeep’s family shared a heartbreaking detail. They said terrorists shot him after he told them he was Hindu. They added he never got the chance to explain he was not Indian.
Butwal Lies Close to India
Butwal is located in Nepal’s Lumbini province, just 25 kilometers from India. Soon after the ambulance carrying Sudeep’s body reached his hometown, hundreds of mourners stood in silence to honor him.
The terror attack in Pahalgam happened on Tuesday. It killed 26 people, most of them tourists. As a result, many countries strongly condemned the attack.
Terror Group With Pakistani Links Claimed Responsibility
Shortly after the attack, Indian officials confirmed that the attackers had ties to Pakistan. The Resistance Group, a front for Lashkar-e-Tayyaba, claimed responsibility.
In response, India reacted swiftly. It expelled Pakistan’s military attachés. It suspended the Indus Waters Treaty. Furthermore, it shut down the Attari land border.
Pakistan Responds With Tough Actions
However, Pakistan struck back with strong actions. It closed its airspace to Indian airlines. It also stopped all trade with India, even through third countries. Moreover, Pakistan rejected India’s decision to suspend the treaty. It called the action an “act of war.”
Terrorists Targeted Non-Muslims
Meanwhile, investigators revealed chilling details. The terrorists checked ID cards and forced people to recite the Kalma, a Muslim prayer. Those who failed were shot.
Later, police found more disturbing signs during the postmortem. They said the attackers may have pulled down victims’ lower garments to check for circumcision, which is common among Muslim men.
