South African fast bowler Kagiso Rabada, who currently plays for Gujarat Titans in the IPL, has been provisionally suspended after testing positive for a recreational drug.
Rabada Reveals the Real Reason Behind His Exit
Initially, Rabada left the Titans’ camp in early April, citing “personal reasons.” However, on Saturday, he clarified the actual reason behind his absence.
In a public statement, he admitted, “As has been reported, I recently returned to South Africa from participating in the IPL for personal reasons. This was due to my returning an adverse analytical finding for the use of a recreational drug.”
He further added, “I am deeply sorry to all those that I have let down. I will never take the privilege of playing cricket for granted. This privilege is much larger than me. It goes beyond my personal aspirations.”
Despite his suspension, Rabada expressed hope about returning, saying, “I am serving a provisional suspension and I am looking forward to returning to the game I love playing.”
What a Provisional Ban Means
A provisional ban is a temporary suspension placed on an athlete while authorities complete their investigation. During this period, Rabada cannot play in any matches.
Notably, Rabada last played on March 29 in a game against Mumbai Indians.
Rabada’s Recent Form and Performance
Before the ban, Rabada had a quiet IPL season. Gujarat Titans signed him for a hefty ₹10.75 crore during the IPL 2025 auction. Yet, he played only two matches this season.
In his debut for the Titans, Rabada gave away 41 runs and took one wicket. The team lost that match to his former side, Punjab Kings. In his second outing, he again claimed one wicket but conceded 42 runs against Mumbai Indians.
Rabada Returns to Dugout But Remains Unavailable
Although Rabada has now returned to the Gujarat Titans’ dugout, his participation in future matches remains uncertain. The franchise has not confirmed whether he will play again this season.
