Google CEO Sundar Pichai recently made a light joke about Microsoft’s Satya Nadella during a podcast on AI competition. During the All-In Podcast with entrepreneur David Friedberg, Pichai shared his thoughts on the AI race and key rivals. He mentioned several top leaders and companies, and then ended with a humorous dig at Nadella.
Gemini Competes in the AI Market
Firstly, Gemini, formerly Bard, is Google’s AI chatbot. It competes with other AI bots from companies like OpenAI, xAI, Meta, and Microsoft. These firms all want to lead the AI space.
When Friedberg asked about his competitors, he said, “OpenAI has Sam [Altman], xAI has Musk, Meta has Zuckerberg, and Microsoft has Satya [Nadella]. Are you willing to share your perspectives on those four competitors - both the companies and the leaders?”
Pichai Praised Rivals but Added Humor
To begin with, Pichai praised the group, saying, “Obviously, by definition, it's a very impressive group. I think you're talking about some of the best companies, some of the best entrepreneurs. It shows how much progress we are going to see, because you’re basically talking about many people who are working hard to drive that progress.”
Moreover, he added, “Look, each of them, they're different people. I am fortunate to know all of them.”
Then, he joked, “I think maybe only one of them has invited me to a dance, not the others.”
The podcast host appeared puzzled, but Pichai continued by mentioning his conversations about technology with Elon Musk.
The Meaning Behind the “Dance” Reference
In reality, Nadella never invited Pichai to dance. Instead, Pichai referred to Nadella’s 2023 comment about Google.
Back then, Microsoft launched Bing’s AI-powered search. Nadella told The Verge, “Today’s announcement is all about rethinking the largest software category there is: search.”
Furthermore, he said, “At the end of the day, [Google is] the 800-pound gorilla in this. I hope that, with our innovation, they will definitely want to come out and show that they can dance. And I want people to know that we made them dance.”
Overall, Pichai remained respectful but added a playful note to the discussion. His words reflect how the AI race, while serious, also has moments of lighthearted rivalry.
