US President Donald Trump announced a major missile defense project on Tuesday (local time). He called the $175 billion plan the “Golden Dome,” as reported by The Hill.
Trump Confirms Design and Leadership
Trump spoke from the Oval Office. He said his administration had finalized the design of the new defense system. He confirmed that General Michael Guetlein, Vice Chief of Space Operations, will lead the project.
System to Be Ready in Three Years
Trump stated that the new missile shield will support existing defense systems. He said the project will be completed in three years. This means the system will be fully ready before his second term ends.
Trump Keeps His Campaign Promise
Trump said he is delivering on a promise he made during his election campaign. “In the campaign I promised the American people I would build a cutting-edge missile defense shield,” Trump said at the White House. “Today I am pleased to announce we have officially selected architecture for this state-of-the-art system.”
System Will Work With Current Defenses
Trump said the Golden Dome will work alongside current missile defense systems. He believes this new technology will strengthen America’s protection against threats.
