Security forces engaged in a gun battle with terrorists in the Singhpora area of Chatroo, located in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district on Thursday morning. The Jammu and Kashmir Police confirmed the encounter. According to local reports, at least three terrorists may be trapped in the area.
Tensions Rise After Cross-Border Strikes
Earlier this month, India carried out precision airstrikes on terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. These strikes took place on May 7 in the early hours.
In retaliation, Pakistan attempted to attack Indian military bases on May 8, 9, and 10. However, Indian forces responded strongly and successfully defended the bases.
Eventually, both sides agreed to stop further military actions. This decision followed talks between the directors general of military operations on May 10.
India Launches Operation Sindoor
As a result of the deadly Pahalgam attack on April 22, India launched Operation Sindoor. That terror attack killed 26 people, most of whom were tourists.
Therefore, security agencies turned their attention to specific areas in south Kashmir. Their goal was to eliminate terrorists hiding in the region.
Security Forces Kill Six Terrorists
Over the past week, Indian forces conducted two operations. As a result, they killed six terrorists in just three days.
VK Birdi, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir, credited the success to strong coordination.
He said, “Due to the intensified focus of various security agencies and the coordination between them, two successful operations were conducted and six terrorists killed in the last three days.” He described the results as “significant achievements.”
Two Encounters in Shopian and Pulwama
The two operations happened on May 13 and May 15. The first took place in Keller, Shopian, while the second was in Nadar village, Tral, located in Pulwama.
In both encounters, security forces killed three terrorists each.
Forces Faced Civilian Rescue Challenge
Major General Dhananjay Joshi, the GOC of Victor Force, shared more details about both operations.
He explained, “On May 12, we got information on the possible presence of a terrorist group in the higher reaches in Keller. On the morning of May 13, on detection of some movement, our parties challenged the terrorists, who retaliated with fire. Our parties neutralised them.”
He then described the second operation in Tral.
He said, “The second operation in Tral area was conducted in a border village. As we were laying a cordon at this village, the terrorists positioned themselves in different houses and fired at us. At this time, the challenge we faced was rescuing the civilian villagers. After this, three terrorists were neutralised.”
