They Were Heading to Australia
The three men had travelled to Iran in hopes of reaching Australia. A travel agency had promised them jobs and arranged their travel. However, their journey took a dark turn.
On May 1, kidnappers abducted them in Varamin, a town in southern Tehran. Iranian police soon located and freed them.
Victims Identified as Punjab Residents
The rescued men have been identified as:
-
Hushanpreet Singh from Sangrur
-
Jaspal Singh from SBS Nagar
-
Amritpal Singh from Hoshiarpur
All three come from the Indian state of Punjab.
Kidnappers Demanded Ransom
According to an India Today report, the kidnappers demanded ransom. Hushanpreet’s mother said that agents took money from the family, promising to send him to Australia. But instead, they routed him illegally to Iran using the "Dunki" method.
Indian Government Intervened
Last week, India’s Ministry of External Affairs said it was in touch with Iranian authorities. Officials continued working with Tehran to locate the men. Eventually, the Iranian police acted and secured their release.
