Macron and Meloni Push for Stronger Europe After Diplomatic Reset
Macron met Meloni in Rome to mend France-Italy ties, as both leaders pledged closer cooperation on Europe’s security, economy, and support for Ukraine.

French President Emmanuel Macron visited Rome on Tuesday to meet Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. His goal was to ease tensions between the two nations. Notably, this marked his first visit since Meloni became Prime Minister in 2022. According to officials, Macron aimed to show “respect” and “friendship.”

Shared Goals, But Sharp Differences

Although both leaders support Ukraine, they often differ on other major issues. For instance, Macron wants to handle US tariffs and other international matters through the European Union. In contrast, Meloni prefers direct engagement, especially with US President Donald Trump.

Different Worlds, Different Views

Macron is a centrist who supports the EU and global cooperation. He studied at elite schools and worked in investment banking. Meanwhile, Meloni comes from a working-class background and leads a nationalist, right-wing party. Therefore, she sees Macron as part of the elite she built her career opposing.

Meloni Treads Cautiously on the EU

Since taking office, Meloni has toned down her anti-EU stance. However, she still criticizes what she sees as EU overreach into national matters. On the other hand, Macron continues to push for deeper EU integration and greater strategic independence for Europe.

A Strategic Reset

Macron requested the meeting, hoping to find common ground. Both leaders face growing challenges, including Russia’s influence, rising tensions in West Asia, and economic pressure from the US. As a result, they agreed to cooperate more closely for Europe’s future.

A Unified Message

In a joint statement, Macron and Meloni confirmed that they would “strengthen their common commitment to a more sovereign Europe.” They also said they would “coordinate their positions on transatlantic relations” and on the EU’s economic and trade security.

Common Concerns Over Security

Additionally, they discussed threats in the Middle East and North Africa. They especially noted Russia’s increasing presence in Libya. Both leaders said Europe must act together to protect its strategic interests in these regions.

Focus on Key Industries

Moreover, they called for stronger EU support for vital industries. This includes steel, automotive, space, artificial intelligence, and clean energy such as nuclear power. They emphasized the need for fast, ambitious action to help European businesses compete fairly.

Stronger Defence and Continued Ukraine Support

Finally, Macron and Meloni pledged “unwavering and unhesitating” support for Ukraine. They also urged a major increase in European defence efforts, calling for “an ambitious change in scale” to secure peace and stability in the region.
