PM Modi to Attend G7 Summit in Canada After Carney’s Invite
PM Modi accepted Canadian PM Carney’s G7 invite, signaling a possible revival of strained India-Canada ties.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi confirmed that he would attend the G7 Summit in Canada on Friday. He accepted the invitation extended by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney over a phone call. The summit will take place from June 15 to 17 in Kananaskis, Alberta.

Modi posted on X that he was “looking forward to meeting PM Carney” during the summit. This will be their first meeting since Carney took office earlier this year.

Carney Replaces Trudeau as Canada’s PM

Mark Carney took over as Canada’s Prime Minister in March. He won the leadership of the Liberal Party after former PM Justin Trudeau resigned. Carney led the party into the April elections and secured a full term as Prime Minister.

Modi has been a regular special invitee at G7 Summits since 2019, beginning with an invitation from French President Emmanuel Macron. The G7 includes the US, UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan.

G7 Invite Signals a Thaw in India-Canada Relations

Carney’s invitation to Modi is being seen as a step toward mending ties between the two countries. India-Canada relations had hit a low point under Trudeau. His open support for the Khalistan movement and unproven allegations against India strained ties severely.

Trudeau accused India of involvement in political violence and even blamed the Indian government for the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a designated terrorist. He expelled Indian diplomats and allowed Khalistani groups to operate freely. India responded by expelling Canadian diplomats and pulling back its own officials.

New Leadership Opens Door for Dialogue

Despite ongoing concerns, Carney’s administration appears more open to improving ties. The Khalistan issue persists in Canada, but the diplomatic tone has shifted. Last week, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand. Both described their talks as “productive” and focused on economic and diplomatic cooperation.

Anand stated that the discussions were aimed at “strengthening Canada-India ties” and “advancing shared priorities.”

India Emphasizes Trust and Sensitivity

India has repeatedly said that restoring normal relations depends on mutual respect. In March, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “The downturn in India-Canada relations was caused by the license that was given to the extremist and secessionist elements in that country.”

According to PTI, both countries are now considering restoring high commissioners, and security agencies have resumed communication.
