Miley Cyrus, known for her constant reinvention, shared intimate details about a turbulent period in her life. On the Every Single Album podcast, she talked about her heavy drug use and how it influenced her 2015 experimental album Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz.
Drug Use Came at a High Cost
Cyrus admitted that drugs were her biggest expense during that time. “The drugs were the biggest cost,” she said. To keep her spending hidden, she used code words. “Which, to hide those from my accountant, we called them vintage clothes.”
She explained how the deception worked. “She would get these checks. That happens on touring all the time,” Cyrus said. “And every time she saw me, she’d be like, ‘Where’s that, like, $15,000 original John Lennon T-shirt that you bought?’ And I’d say, ‘Oh, it’s upstairs.’”
Then she added with a grin, “We just really want to protect it. It's really delicate. The fabric… got to take care of it! So I bought a lot of vintage clothes that year.” But in reality, those clothes were a cover for her drug spending.
She Feels Lucky to Be Alive
Looking back, Cyrus expressed deep gratitude. “I’m so glad I survived that time in my life,” she said. “I would definitely not encourage anyone else to go this hard, but the fact that I got through it… I’m very glad I got to do it.”

Sobriety Is Now Her Anchor
After that phase, Cyrus chose a sober path. In a 2017 Billboard interview, she called herself “evolving” after giving up marijuana. She has stayed sober since 2019, except for a short relapse during the pandemic. Now, she treats sobriety as essential. “That’s like my God. I need it,” she stated.
She Brings Back the Past with Emotion
Recently, Cyrus gave an emotional performance of The Climb, the hit ballad from Hannah Montana: The Movie. The song touched fans and brought back memories of her Disney Channel days. She also added a light moment, mentioning her boyfriend, drummer Maxx Morando. “He’s been waiting since middle school to play this song,” she joked.
