PM Modi and Italian PM Giorgia Meloni showcased their growing friendship at the G7 Summit, highlighting closer India-Italy ties and shared global goals.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on the sidelines of the 51st G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada. Modi said he was happy about the “growing friendship between India and Italy” and added that their ties “will continue to strengthen” for mutual benefit.

A video from the summit showed Modi greeting Meloni with a handshake and sharing a quick conversation, which drew attention online.

Trend on Social Media

Once again, Modi and Meloni’s friendly interaction went viral. Social media users revived the popular hashtag #Melodi after their meeting.

Their previous meetings had also attracted attention. During COP28 in Dubai, Meloni had shared a selfie with Modi, captioning it: “Good friends at COP28, #Melodi.” Their camaraderie at the G20 in India had led users to edit videos with romantic Bollywood soundtracks and humorous captions, making it look like a movie scene.

Although playful, these posts highlight how people notice the leaders' warmth and mutual respect.

Talks on Energy, Sustainability, and Industry

Both leaders expressed interest in working closely together on issues like clean energy, sustainability, and industrial growth. Their discussion reflected a shared vision for the future.

Modi Lands in Canada for Sixth G7

Earlier in the day, Modi arrived at the Pomeroy Kananaskis Mountain Lodge, where Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney welcomed him.

This marks Modi’s sixth straight participation in the G7 Summit and his first visit to Canada in ten years. At Calgary Airport, he received a ceremonial welcome. India’s acting High Commissioner Chinmoy Naik was among the officials who received him.

Modi Says He Will “Share Thoughts on Global Issues”

After landing in Calgary, Modi posted on X that he would meet leaders and talk about key matters. “Landed in Calgary, Canada, to take part in the G7 Summit,” he wrote. “Will be meeting various leaders at the Summit and sharing my thoughts on important global issues. Will also be emphasising the priorities of the Global South.”

Modi’s trip is part of a three-nation tour that began in Cyprus and will end in Croatia.

India’s Role in G7 Energy Talks

According to MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, Modi will join G7 discussions on “the future of energy security.” He said the Prime Minister would focus on “diversification, technology, infrastructure, and investment,” all aimed at improving energy access and affordability.

Jaiswal also shared on X that, “PM will also hold several bilateral meetings on the sidelines.”

Visit Signals Improved Diplomacy

Modi’s visit to Canada signals a possible shift in India-Canada ties, which have seen tension in recent years. However, his interactions with Carney and Meloni suggest a renewed spirit of cooperation and diplomacy.
