Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump spoke over the phone for 35 minutes on Wednesday, June 18. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed the details of the conversation, which covered key issues like Operation Sindoor and India-Pakistan relations.
Trump Requested the Call
According to reports, President Trump had requested the call. He was expected to meet PM Modi in person during the G7 Summit in Canada. However, he had to cut his visit short because of rising tensions in West Asia.
Modi Dismisses Mediation Role
During the call, PM Modi made it clear that India handled the recent four-day military conflict with Pakistan independently. He told Trump that the ceasefire discussions happened directly between Indian and Pakistani military officials, and only “at Pakistan’s own request.”
Modi firmly said, “India has never accepted mediation, does not accept it, and will never accept it.” He rejected any suggestion of American involvement in resolving the dispute.
No Trade Talks with US
PM Modi also addressed Trump’s earlier claims about trade talks. He clarified that India and the US never discussed any trade deal during the conflict. He emphasized that the focus remained solely on national security.
Trump Invites Modi to US
President Trump asked if Modi could stop in the US while returning from Canada. However, PM Modi said he couldn’t accept the invitation due to his prior commitments. He is expected to visit Croatia before returning to India.
India’s Stand on Terrorism
The two leaders also discussed India’s counter-terrorism efforts. Modi briefed Trump on Operation Sindoor, launched in response to the terror attack in Pahalgam.
He said India “precisely targeted only terrorist hideouts” in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir on the night of May 6–7. He described India’s military actions as “measured” and “non-escalatory.”
Modi added, “India will respond to Pakistan’s bullets with shells.” He said the operation is still underway and stressed that terrorism is “a full-scale war, not a proxy war.”
Trump Supports India’s Stance
President Trump expressed his support for India’s efforts to fight terrorism. Interestingly, his conversation with Modi came just before he was scheduled to have lunch with Pakistan’s Army Chief, General Asim Munir.
