Tom Cruise to Be Awarded Honorary Oscar for Career Achievement
Tom Cruise will receive an honorary Oscar this November, recognising his lifetime of contributions to cinema after four missed chances.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that Tom Cruise will be honoured at the Governors Awards later this year. However, he won’t win for any one film. Instead, the Academy is recognising his entire career in film.

The Academy said, “Tom Cruise’s incredible commitment to our filmmaking community, to the theatrical experience, and to the stunts community has inspired us all.”

What Is an Honorary Oscar?

The Honorary Oscar, now in its 16th year, is given to artists with “extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement.” This year, Cruise will be honoured alongside:

  • Wynn Thomas, a production designer

  • Debbie Allen, an actor and choreographer

  • Dolly Parton, who will receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award

This special ceremony will take place on November 16 at Ovation Hollywood. Although it won’t be televised, it’s expected to draw major attention.

Cruise Came Close Before But Never Won

Cruise is one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, yet he has never won a competitive Oscar. Over the years, he received four nominations:

  • Born on the Fourth of July (1989)

  • Jerry Maguire (1996)

  • Magnolia (1999)

  • Top Gun: Maverick (2022)

Despite strong performances, the Academy never gave him the golden statue — until now, in this honorary form.

Many fans celebrated the decision. They believe Cruise has deserved this recognition for years. One person wrote online, “He has earned one a million times over. It is so insulting when they give these honorary Oscars out to people who been deserved them.”

Voters Criticised for Ignoring His Best Roles

Several fans mentioned Cruise’s powerful performance in Magnolia. They said he should have won back then. One pointed out, “Tom Cruise performance in Magnolia is one of his best and should have won an Oscar for it but we know Oscar voters don't even watch the movies.”

This comment referred to a new Oscar rule for 2026. Starting that year, all voters must watch every nominated film in a category before voting.

Why This Moment Matters

Cruise is now 62 and still one of the biggest names in Hollywood. He has performed daring stunts, pushed for theatrical releases, and supported the movie industry during tough times. This honorary Oscar finally acknowledges those efforts.
