James Gunn’s Superman Earns Praise After Preview Screenings
Early reactions to James Gunn’s Superman call it “beautiful,” “fresh,” and a bold new take on the iconic hero.

James Gunn’s Superman reboot will release in theatres worldwide on July 11. This marks the third Superman reboot in 20 years, following Brandon Routh and Henry Cavill.

Last week, the studio held exclusive preview screenings in Brazil and Manila. Gunn and lead actor David Corenswet joined the audiences for these events. After the screenings, many fans shared their reactions online. Most of them gave glowing reviews.

Viewers Praise Tone and Visual Style

For example, one viewer called the footage “DAMN BEAUTIFUL” and said “time absolutely flew by.” They explained that watching it lifted their mood after a rough day.

Moreover, many noted that the film felt different from Zack Snyder’s darker style. One early review said the film is “very Silver-Age”, full of “sci-fi tropes”, and big on “spectacle, drama, and laughs.” They added that it has “a very earnest” and emotional tone.

Similarly, another viewer shared what a friend told them after attending the preview. According to the post, the friend felt the film was “180 degrees away from Zack Snyder’s vision.” They also said “the trailers have been a bit of a misdirect,” but most importantly, their friend “really, really liked it.”

Corenswet Earns Praise for His Performance

In addition, several fans praised David Corenswet’s performance. One viewer wrote that the preview was “so fcking good” and gave “a fresh new perspective” on the character. They added, “David is SO GOOD switching from Clark to Superman,” and said he shares great chemistry with Rachel Brosnahan, who plays Lois Lane.

A Fresh Start for DC’s Superhero Universe

Now, Superman is expected to launch a new DC Universe under Gunn’s leadership. The cast also features Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, along with Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, and Isabela Merced.

Finally, the full film will be available in theatres starting July 11.
