The much-awaited sequel to The Devil Wears Prada has officially begun production. Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci are all returning to their iconic roles.
Kenneth Branagh Joins the Cast
Additionally, Kenneth Branagh will join the film as Miranda Priestly’s husband, according to Variety. Streep will once again play Miranda, the powerful editor-in-chief of Runway magazine.
Disney Confirms the Sequel With a Teaser
Meanwhile, Disney’s 20th Century Studios confirmed the news on Instagram. They posted a teaser featuring two red devil-style heels, which immediately hinted at the return of the fashion-themed classic.
A Look Back at the First Film
The original movie is based on Lauren Weisberger’s 2004 novel. It tells the story of Andy Sachs, played by Hathaway. Andy, a young journalist, lands a job at a top fashion magazine—“a job a million girls would kill to get!” However, she quickly finds herself overwhelmed by her demanding boss, Miranda Priestly.
Interestingly, the book was inspired by real life. Weisberger had worked as Anna Wintour’s assistant at Vogue. Coincidentally, Wintour just announced last week that she will step down as Vogue’s editor-in-chief after 37 years.
What the Sequel Might Explore
So far, producers haven’t shared full plot details. However, Variety reports that Miranda will face challenges in a changing media world. She will now compete with Emily, her former assistant, who has become a top executive at a luxury brand. That company controls the advertising money Miranda needs to keep Runway afloat.
Andy Sachs' Role Still Unclear
At the end of the first film, Andy leaves Runway to work for a newspaper. Therefore, it’s still unknown how Anne Hathaway’s character will fit into the new story.
Original Creators Return
Thankfully, the original creative team is also returning. David Frankel will direct once again, while Aline Brosh McKenna, who wrote the first film, will handle the script for the sequel.
Finally, the release date is confirmed. The Devil Wears Prada 2 will hit theatres worldwide on May 1, 2026.
