Indian films have now reached massive budgets. Earlier, ₹50 crore seemed huge. But now, streaming films often cost double that. Taking things to the next level, Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana has become India’s most expensive film ever.
Ramayana Breaks All Records
Ramayana Part 1 recently completed filming. Now, it has moved into post-production. According to Bollywood Hungama, the film carries a whopping $100 million budget (₹835 crore). This makes it the highest-budget film in Indian cinema history.
Previously, Kalki 2898 AD held that position at ₹600 crore. RRR and Adipurush followed at ₹550 crore each. Even Brahmastra, known for its VFX, stood at ₹375 crore—much less than Ramayana.
Namit Malhotra Leads the Project
Namit Malhotra is producing the film. He owns Prime Focus, a major global media company. In addition, he leads DNEG, a British-Indian VFX firm. DNEG has won eight Oscars for Best Visual Effects. Naturally, they’re handling Ramayana’s VFX. This strong team suggests Ramayana will offer Hollywood-quality visuals.
A Star-Packed Cast
Director Nitesh Tiwari has brought together major stars:
-
Ranbir Kapoor plays Lord Rama
-
Sai Pallavi appears as Sita
-
Yash takes on the role of Ravana
The supporting cast also shines. It includes Vivek Oberoi, Rakul Preet Singh, Lara Dutta, Kajal Aggarwal, Ravi Dubey, Kunal Kapoor, Arun Govil, Sheeba Chadha, and Indira Krishnan.
Based on Valmiki’s Epic
This two-part film adapts Valmiki’s Ramayana. While Part 1 has wrapped up, Part 2 will follow. The team is now working on visual effects and editing. Fans won’t have to wait long for a preview. The makers will release the first glimpse on July 3. After that, the full film will hit theatres on Diwali 2026.
