Rising Star Vaibhav Suryavanshi Watches Gill’s Record Knock at Edgbaston
Young Indian batter Vaibhav Suryavanshi watched Shubman Gill’s historic double century after shining in the U19 ODI series against England.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi, one of India’s most exciting young cricketers, was seen at the Edgbaston cricket ground on Thursday. He was there to watch Shubman Gill's historic double century during the second day of the ongoing Test match against England.

Earlier this year, Vaibhav caught everyone’s attention with his aggressive batting during the IPL 2025 season. Now, he is continuing his form in the India U19 ODI series in England.

Shubman Gill Creates History

Shubman Gill, who had already scored a century on Day 1, added another hundred on Day 2. He became the first Indian captain to score a double century in a Test match in England. Moreover, he also became the first Asian captain to score 200 in a SENA country (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia), breaking Tillakaratne Dilshan’s previous record of 193 at Lord’s in 2011.

This knock also made Gill only the second Indian skipper to score a double century overseas, after Virat Kohli’s 200 in North Sound in 2016.

Vaibhav Spotted in the Stands

Just moments after Gill's fiery celebration pushed India's total beyond 500, cameras caught Vaibhav in the crowd. The BCCI sent him to watch the senior team play, just a day after he smashed 86 runs in the third U19 ODI against England.

Vaibhav currently plays for the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL. During the 2025 season, he became the youngest player to score a century in men’s T20 cricket. He was in the stands along with the India U19 team, including captain Ayush Mhatre, who also impressed during IPL 2025 playing for Chennai Super Kings.

Experts Praise Young Talent on Air

While commentating, former England captain Mike Atherton noted, "Good to see the under-19 team here. They're playing England in a series this summer."

Dinesh Karthik, who was also on commentary, added, "The captain, Ayush Mhatre played for the Chennai Super Kings this year. Did really well. We are proud of Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who played for the Rajasthan Royals. And I'm sure a lot of these guys who are part of this team will eventually end up playing for the country and obviously the IPL as well."

Atherton replied, "As Shubman Gill did. He was a World Cup-winning under-19 cricketer. Oh, not captain. Prithvi Shaw was the captain when India won that."

Vaibhav’s U19 Series Performance

So far in the ongoing U19 ODI series, Vaibhav has scored 86, 45, and 48 in three matches. His 86-run knock on Thursday nearly broke Rishabh Pant’s nine-year-old record for the fastest fifty in U19 cricket.

His blazing performance helped India take a 2-1 lead in the five-match series, with two games still to play.
