Republicans delivered a major legislative win to President Donald Trump on Thursday. Just in time for Independence Day, they passed his massive domestic bill, often referred to as the “Big Beautiful” bill.
Trump will sign it on July 4 during a formal ceremony, turning it into law on the nation’s most symbolic day.
Senate Passes Final Version With Tie-Breaking Vote
Previously, the House approved the bill in May by a single vote. Then, this week, the Senate passed the final version. Since the vote was tied, Vice President JD Vance cast the deciding vote.
As a result, the House passed the revised version on Thursday by 218-214, officially clearing the bill for the president.
Tax Cuts Take Center Stage
Importantly, the bill includes $4.5 trillion in tax cuts. It raises the child tax credit from $2,000 to $2,200. However, many low-income families will still miss out on the full benefit.
Additionally, the bill introduces temporary deductions for tips, overtime pay, and auto loans. It also offers a $6,000 deduction for seniors earning $75,000 or less, fulfilling Trump’s promise to reduce taxes on Social Security benefits.
Clean Energy Programs Rolled Back
Meanwhile, the bill makes sharp cuts to clean energy incentives established in the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act. It eliminates benefits for:
-
Buying electric vehicles
-
Installing home charging stations
-
Making energy-efficient home improvements
Furthermore, it shuts down the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, which had supported local pollution-reduction projects through nonprofit groups.
Bill Boosts Immigration Crackdown and Military Spending
In addition, the bill allocates around $350 billion to border enforcement and national defence. It supports Trump’s vow to carry out the “largest mass deportation operation in American history.”
Specifically, the bill funds:
-
100,000 immigration detention beds
-
10,000 new ICE officers with $10,000 signing bonuses
-
A significant increase in Border Patrol staffing
-
New fees for asylum and legal status applications
On the defence front, the Pentagon will receive billions. This includes shipbuilding, munitions, and $25 billion for the Golden Dome missile defence system. Additionally, $1 billion will go toward border-related military operations.
Medicaid Faces Major Cuts
At the last minute, lawmakers added a provision that sends $10 billion annually for five years to rural hospitals, totaling $50 billion.
However, the bill also imposes major Medicaid cuts. It proposes to:
-
Gradually lower provider taxes from 6% to 3.5% by 2032
-
Ban Medicaid payments to abortion providers (like Planned Parenthood) for one year
-
Enforce work requirements for able-bodied adults
-
Require frequent eligibility reviews
According to the Congressional Budget Office, these changes could lead to 11.8 million Americans losing Medicaid coverage over the next ten years.
Trump and GOP Leaders Praise the Bill
After the bill passed, Trump celebrated online. “One of the most consequential Bills ever. The USA is the ‘HOTTEST’ Country in the World, by far!!!” he wrote on social media.
At the same time, House Speaker Mike Johnson described the legislation as a turning point. “Today we are laying a key cornerstone of America’s new Golden Age,” he told reporters, according to AFP.
