Lando Norris delivered a powerful performance on Sunday to win a chaotic and rain-soaked British Grand Prix at Silverstone. The McLaren driver secured his first-ever home victory, finishing 6.8 seconds ahead of his team-mate Oscar Piastri.
This marked Norris’ fourth win of the season, the eighth of his career, and a huge step in his title bid—bringing him within just eight points of championship leader Piastri.
After crossing the finish line, a visibly emotional Norris said, “Thank you, McLaren, thanks everyone. This is beautiful. Winning at home. This is a dream.”
Piastri Penalized After Leading
Piastri had been leading the race but was handed a 10-second penalty for driving too slowly behind the safety car—a move that turned the race in Norris’ favor. He didn’t hide his disappointment but kept his words measured.
“I want to congratulate Nico,” he said. “That’s the best story of the day – but I don’t want to say much else to avoid getting into trouble.”
Hulkenberg’s First Podium After 239 Races
In a heartwarming moment, Nico Hulkenberg claimed third place for Sauber, earning his first-ever podium after 239 Grand Prix appearances.
The veteran German said, “It feels good. A long time coming! But we had it in us and I had it in me somewhere. It’s pretty surreal. All a bit crazy now.”
Dramatic Racing in Unpredictable Weather
The race began under grey skies and difficult conditions at Silverstone. Rain came and went, making tire choices tricky and the track slippery. Max Verstappen started from pole but quickly lost control of the race.
During the early laps, several incidents occurred:
-
Liam Lawson went off on Lap 1, triggering a virtual safety car.
-
Franco Colapinto stalled in the pit lane and retired.
-
Gabriel Bortoleto abandoned his Sauber shortly after, causing another VSC.
On Lap 8, Piastri overtook Verstappen at Stowe to take the lead. Norris soon passed Verstappen as well, but a slow pit stop cost Norris track position.
The rain returned, causing visibility issues. “There’s water in my visor, a huge splash and I can’t see,” reported Charles Leclerc. Hamilton also struggled in the spray and fell to eighth.
Chaos Peaks with Third Safety Car
A third safety car came out after rookie Isack Hadjar crashed into Andrea Kimi Antonelli at Copse. When racing resumed on Lap 22, Verstappen lost grip and spun off at Copse, just after Piastri had braked heavily before the safety car pulled in.
Following an investigation, stewards gave Piastri a 10-second penalty for slowing too much before the restart.
Norris Takes Control Mid-Race
By Lap 26, Piastri still led but had to serve his penalty during a pit stop, which handed the lead—and eventually the victory—to Norris. From there, the Brit held his nerve and navigated the wet track to seal a memorable home win.
