Rubio Heads to ASEAN Summit, Shifts U.S. Focus to Asia
Marco Rubio begins his first Asia trip as U.S. Secretary of State, focusing on trade tensions and regional alliances at the ASEAN Summit in Malaysia

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will visit Malaysia for the ASEAN Summit, making it his first official trip to Asia since taking office in January. His visit signals a major policy shift, as Washington now moves its focus from Europe and West Asia to strengthening regional ties in Asia.

Reaffirming U.S. Commitment to the Indo-Pacific

Tammy Bruce, spokesperson for the State Department, stated, “In his first trip to Asia as Secretary of State, Secretary Rubio is focused on reaffirming the United States’ commitment to advancing a free, open, and secure Indo‑Pacific region.”
Rubio’s visit clearly highlights America's intent to engage more deeply with East and Southeast Asia. Moreover, senior officials stressed it is “in America’s interest” to counter growing Chinese influence by prioritizing Asian alliances.

Tariffs Take Center Stage

Rubio's trip follows President Trump’s imposition of new tariffs on several Asian countries. Japan, South Korea, and Malaysia now face 25 percent tariffs, while Laos faces a 40 percent levy.
These trade measures are expected to dominate the discussions. According to The Business Times, a senior official said Rubio will assure ASEAN leaders that the U.S. aims to “rebalance” trade partnerships rather than isolate them.

Japan and South Korea Visits on Hold

Originally, Rubio had planned to begin his Asia tour in Japan and South Korea. He was scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya to discuss pressing issues like U.S. tariff policies, West Asia developments, and regional threats from China, Russia, and North Korea.
However, due to ongoing efforts to secure a Gaza ceasefire, Rubio postponed those visits. Nikkei reported that he plans to return to Tokyo and Seoul later, once the situation in Gaza stabilizes.
