Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli could return to India’s playing XI as early as next month. However, this depends on whether the BCCI approves a proposed limited-overs series in Sri Lanka.
SLC Steps In After Bangladesh Tour Gets Postponed
Initially, India was scheduled to tour Bangladesh from August 17 to 31. However, both boards postponed the tour to 2026 due to security concerns and scheduling issues.
As a result, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has approached the BCCI to fill this window. They’ve proposed a short white-ball series consisting of three ODIs and three T20Is—similar to the original Bangladesh tour.
BCCI Yet to Confirm
So far, the BCCI has not officially responded. According to a Cricbuzz report, BCCI officials are still evaluating the situation. A lot depends on whether the Asia Cup gets government clearance.
“There is a request pending from the SLC, but we have not decided on it yet. We will have to see the situation with the Asia Cup. Everything is interlinked,” a BCCI official said.
Series Could See Rohit and Kohli in Action Again
If the Sri Lanka tour gets approved, fans might witness the return of two Indian legends—Rohit and Kohli. Since India’s T20 World Cup 2024 campaign, both players have opted out of T20Is and Test matches, choosing to focus solely on ODIs.
They also skipped India’s ongoing Test tour of England. Therefore, the Sri Lanka ODIs could be their first international appearance since then.
Key Discussions Underway with Team Management
Meanwhile, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia is in London for the Lord’s Test. He is expected to hold discussions with head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar. The final decision will likely be made after these internal consultations.
These talks will not only address the Sri Lanka tour but also the Asia Cup, which still hangs in balance.
Bangladesh Tour Postponed Due to Security Concerns
Earlier, both the Indian and Bangladeshi cricket boards had said the tour was postponed due to “international commitments and scheduling convenience.” However, insiders have confirmed that rising regional tensions and security risks were the main reasons behind the decision.
Sri Lanka Series Could Serve as Key Preparation
If the BCCI gives the green light, the Sri Lanka series will help India use the August window effectively. More importantly, it will offer crucial match time for ODI specialists like Rohit and Kohli.
Until then, fans will need to stay patient. But all signs suggest that a long-awaited reunion with India’s top stars could happen very soon.
