Bumrah Grabs Five at Lord’s, Says Fatigue Behind Quiet Celebration
Jasprit Bumrah took a brilliant five-wicket haul at Lord’s but his quiet celebration raised questions—he later said he was simply tired.

Jasprit Bumrah once again showed his class with the ball on Day 2 of the third Test at Lord’s. His superb five-wicket haul helped India bowl out England for 387 shortly after lunch. Yet, it was his calm reaction after taking the final wicket that caught as much attention as the performance itself.

Bumrah’s spell of 5 for 74 tore through England’s middle and lower order. He took three key wickets in the morning—Ben Stokes, Joe Root, and Chris Woakes. His burst reduced England from a strong 251/4 to a shaky 271/7. This shift put India in control of the match.

A New Record and a Spot on the Honours Board

This performance gave Bumrah his 15th five-wicket haul in Test cricket. With this, he broke Kapil Dev’s record for the most five-fors by an Indian bowler in overseas Tests. More importantly, for the first time in his career, Bumrah’s name entered the historic Lord’s honours board.

Bumrah’s Silent Reaction Raises Questions

When Bumrah dismissed Jofra Archer to complete his five-for, he didn’t celebrate. There was no smile, no jump, and no fist pump. The reaction was surprisingly muted. Many wondered why the star pacer didn’t show any excitement.

Bumrah explained everything during the post-day press conference. He said he was simply exhausted. “The reality is that I was tired. There was no happiness factor. I bowled for a long time on the field, and sometimes I get tired,” Bumrah said.

He added with a smile, “I'm not 21-22 anymore that I'll jump around. I'm usually not like that. I was happy that I contributed. Other than that, I just wanted to go back to my mark and bowl the next ball.”

Bumrah Returns to Lead After Rest

Bumrah had missed the previous Test in Edgbaston as part of workload management. However, he returned in style at Lord’s. He bowled with pace and movement, proving again why he is India’s top fast bowler in all conditions.

One of the highlights of his spell was the dismissal of Joe Root. Bumrah bowled a perfect delivery that came in and hit Root’s middle stump. This was the 11th time he had dismissed the former England captain in Test matches.

This five-for was also his second in a row this series, having taken one in Leeds earlier.

India Reach 145 for 3 in Reply

India ended Day 2 on 145/3, still trailing England by 242 runs. KL Rahul batted with elegance and stayed unbeaten on 53. Rishabh Pant also showed grit. He came in at No. 5 and remained not out on 19, even though he had a finger injury.

India’s innings started with a setback. Jofra Archer, playing his first Test in over four years, removed Yashasvi Jaiswal for 13 with just his third delivery.

Karun Nair played a solid knock and scored 40. However, Joe Root took a brilliant one-handed catch in the slips to end his innings. Shubman Gill, who had scored back-to-back double hundreds in the last Test, fell early. He managed only 16 runs in this innings.
