Italy’s men’s cricket team achieved a historic milestone by qualifying for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. The tournament will be hosted in India and Sri Lanka. Despite losing their final game against the Netherlands, Italy progressed thanks to a superior net run rate.
Qualification Comes Down to Net Run Rate
In the ICC Men’s T20 Europe Region Final, Italy, Jersey, and the Netherlands competed for two World Cup spots. While the Netherlands remained unbeaten with eight points, both Italy and Jersey ended with five points each. Italy edged past Jersey due to a better net run rate of +0.612, compared to Jersey’s +0.306. Although Italy scored just 135 runs in their final match, the Netherlands chased it down with ease. Still, Italy qualified alongside the Dutch.
Joe Burns Brings Experience and Leadership
Former Australian Test opener Joe Burns captained Italy during the tournament. Burns, who qualifies to play for Italy through his Italian mother, has featured in 23 Tests for Australia and scored four Test centuries. His presence has given the Italian team a boost in both skill and confidence.
Key Players Step Up for Italy
Apart from Burns, Italy’s squad included other standout names. Former Kent all-rounder Grant Stewart brought experience from the English county circuit. Emilio Gay, who recently played for England Lions, also made a strong impact. His 50-run knock helped Italy defeat Scotland by 12 runs. The team also featured Jaspreet Singh, a medium pacer of Indian origin, who has already played 23 T20Is for Italy.
A Bright Cricketing Moment Amid Football Struggles
Italy’s cricket achievement stands out, especially as the national football team faces uncertainty. Despite being four-time FIFA World Cup champions, Italy failed to qualify for the 2018 and 2022 tournaments. They have not yet secured their place in the 2026 edition either. As football continues to struggle, cricket brings a new reason for Italian sports fans to celebrate.
