India successfully tested two nuclear-capable missiles on Thursday. The Strategic Forces Command launched Prithvi-II and Agni-I from Odisha’s coast. As a result, the defence ministry confirmed that both missiles met all technical and operational goals.
Tests Follow India-Pakistan Tensions
Earlier, India had faced a military clash with Pakistan in May. Therefore, these missile tests are seen as a strong message. According to the ministry, the successful trials have reinforced India’s strategic deterrence.
Prithvi-II and Agni-I Bolster Nuclear Strength
Importantly, the Prithvi-II missile can hit targets up to 350 kilometres away. It can carry 500 kilograms of nuclear or conventional warheads. Similarly, Agni-I can strike targets 700 to 900 kilometres away. It can carry a payload of 1,000 kilograms. Both missiles form the core of India’s nuclear defence strategy.
Moreover, the ministry stated, “Short-range ballistic missiles -- Prithvi-II and Agni-I -- were successfully test-fired from the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur, Odisha on July 17.” It also confirmed that both missiles passed “all operational and technical parameters.”
Akash Prime Missile Tested in Ladakh
Meanwhile, India also tested the upgraded Akash Prime missile in Ladakh on Wednesday. Notably, this version can operate at heights above 4,500 metres. Since Ladakh is close to the Line of Actual Control, this test holds strategic importance.
Additionally, the ministry said this trial followed “exceptional performance” by India’s air defence during Operation Sindoor. The ministry explained, “India on July 16 achieved a significant milestone by successfully destroying two aerial high speed unmanned targets at high altitude in Ladakh by Akash Prime, the upgraded variant of Akash weapon system for the Indian Army.”

Akash Prime Gets Important Upgrades
In addition, Akash Prime features a new radio frequency seeker developed in India. The army provided feedback, which led engineers to improve the missile’s performance. As a result, the ministry said these upgrades “improve operational effectiveness.”
Defence Minister Praises Team
Finally, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the Indian Army, DRDO, and the industry teams. He described the missile tests as a “remarkable achievement.”
