India is set to hold a large Indian Air Force (IAF) exercise from July 23 to 25 in Rajasthan, close to the Pakistan border. The government issued a Notice to Airmen (Notam) to alert civilian aircraft about the upcoming drills.
Exercise Led by South Western Air Command
The South Western Air Command will lead this high-intensity aerial exercise. It will cover areas in Rajasthan and Gujarat, especially between Barmer and Jodhpur. This region lies near Pakistan’s border. Officials confirmed that the drill aims to boost India’s combat readiness along the western front.
According to an official, “The exercise, likely involving two or more IAF commands, is designed to ensure round-the-clock preparedness.”
Pakistan Responds with Its Own Notams
Interestingly, Pakistan has issued similar Notams. Its central region will remain restricted until July 23, while its southern zone will see restrictions between July 22 and 23. This parallel move suggests Pakistan is preparing for its own military activities.
Officials explained that Notams clear airspace for military operations and keep civilian flights away from danger.
India Deploys Rafale and Sukhoi Jets
The IAF will deploy frontline fighter jets in this exercise. Rafale, Mirage 2000, and Sukhoi-30 aircraft will play key roles in the drill. Alongside them, air defence systems and support platforms will also operate. Importantly, the exercise will include night-time operations to test India’s ability to conduct 24/7 air missions.
Exercise Follows Operation Sindoor
This drill comes soon after Operation Sindoor, India’s retaliatory strike against terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). India launched this operation after terrorists backed by Pakistan killed 26 people, mostly tourists, in a deadly attack in Pahalgam on April 22.
India’s response marked a shift in its security approach, as officials now describe a “new normal” in counter-terror operations.
Strategic Message to Pakistan
This upcoming IAF exercise serves not just as a routine drill but also as a strategic show of strength. By demonstrating its air power near the border, India aims to send a clear message to Pakistan. The exercise underlines India’s readiness to respond swiftly and decisively to any cross-border threats.
In conclusion, India’s planned exercise highlights its focus on maintaining air superiority and strengthening its defence posture along the western front.
