A high-level meeting of senior BJP leaders and Union Ministers took place at Parliament House on Tuesday. The meeting was held inside Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s office. This gathering came just a day after Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s unexpected resignation, which has created a major political stir.
Key Ministers Discuss Strategy
Union Ministers Amit Shah, S Jaishankar, JP Nadda, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Kiren Rijiju, and Arjun Ram Meghwal attended the meeting. Rajnath Singh led the discussions. So far, BJP leaders have not shared any details about what was discussed. However, many believe the resignation and upcoming Vice President selection were key topics.
Dhankhar Quits Citing Health Issues
On Monday evening, Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from the Vice President’s post. In his letter to President Droupadi Murmu, he said, “To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution.”
He thanked President Murmu for her support. He also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Council of Ministers for their cooperation during his tenure. Dhankhar, who took office in August 2022, had nearly three years remaining in his term.
Opposition Raises Questions
Soon after Dhankhar’s resignation, the Opposition linked his exit to the absence of BJP leaders JP Nadda and Kiren Rijiju from the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting. They suspect internal political tensions within the ruling NDA alliance.
Opposition leaders are now demanding clarity from the government regarding the sudden resignation.
BJP Likely to Announce New Vice President Candidate Soon
According to latest updates, the BJP is expected to decide its next Vice President candidate within the next few days. As the BJP-led NDA holds a majority in Parliament, its nominee will likely be elected easily.
Sources say names of senior Union Ministers and experienced governors are under consideration. Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh is also seen as a possible candidate.
Political Tension Rises
With Dhankhar stepping down at the start of the Monsoon Session, Parliament is expected to witness heated debates. The Opposition is preparing to corner the government over this sudden leadership crisis.
At the same time, the BJP appears focused on managing the situation internally while maintaining public silence on the issue.
The political atmosphere in Delhi remains tense. All eyes are now on Prime Minister Modi and the BJP’s top leadership as they prepare to announce their Vice Presidential pick soon.
