Indian-American economist Gita Gopinath, known globally for her expertise in international finance and macroeconomics, has announced her decision to leave the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and return to Harvard University. She will join as the inaugural Gregory and Ania Coffey Professor of Economics from September 1.
Who is Gita Gopinath?
Born in India, Gita Gopinath is one of the world’s leading economists. She was raised in Mysuru, Karnataka, and completed her undergraduate studies at Delhi University. She later earned a master’s degree from the Delhi School of Economics and the University of Washington, followed by a Ph.D. in economics from Princeton University.
Over the years, Gopinath has become a well-respected figure in global economic policy discussions. Her research work mainly focuses on exchange rates, trade policy, international capital flows, and emerging markets. In 2019, she became the first woman to hold the position of Chief Economist at the IMF. She later took on the role of First Deputy Managing Director, becoming the IMF’s second-highest-ranking official.
She has also been honoured with several prestigious awards, including being named among the World’s Top 100 Global Thinkers by Foreign Policy magazine.

Trailblazing Role at the IMF
Gopinath broke barriers as the first-ever female chief economist in the IMF’s history. Joining the organisation in January 2019, she later became First Deputy Managing Director in 2022. During her tenure, she played a key role in helping the IMF navigate the global economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, inflation crises, and geopolitical tensions.
Academic Background at Harvard
Before her IMF stint, Gopinath was already a respected academic figure at Harvard University. From 2005 to 2022, she served as the John Zwaanstra Professor of International Studies and Economics. Earlier, she taught at the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business.
Focus on Teaching and Research
As she prepares to return to Harvard, Gopinath hopes to inspire young economists while expanding her research. She aims to work on solving complex global economic challenges through innovative thinking and analysis. Gita Gopinath’s return to Harvard marks both the conclusion of her influential role at the IMF and a fresh chapter in her distinguished academic career.
