A Visit Marking Deep Friendship
PM Modi visited the Maldives at the invitation of President Mohamed Muizzu. He also attended the country’s 60th Independence Day celebrations as the Guest of Honour. During a banquet held in his honour, PM Modi highlighted the strong emotional and historical bond between the two nations. He said, “India-Maldives relations are centuries old. We are neighbours, partners and true friends who stand together in times of need. Maldives holds a special place in India's 'Neighbourhood First' policy... This is not just diplomacy but a relation of deep affinity."
President Muizzu Praises India’s Support
During the visit, Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu thanked India for being a reliable and trusted partner. He spoke highly of India’s help in many areas that directly affect the daily lives of Maldivian citizens. He said, “India has long stood as the Maldives's closest and most trusted partner. Our collaboration spans a wide range of areas, from security and trade to healthcare, education and beyond, touching the everyday lives of our citizens.”
Agreements to Strengthen Partnership
Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri called the visit “very timely and productive.” He explained that both countries reviewed their Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership. According to him, the two sides also agreed to explore new areas for further collaboration. “We should continue to implement various elements of this vision, and explore newer avenues to collaborate further between the two sides,” he said.
As a major outcome of the visit, India and Maldives signed eight important agreements. These agreements focused on areas such as a line of credit, debt repayment, fisheries cooperation, digital transformation, and expanding India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in the Maldives. The signing ceremony took place in the presence of PM Modi and President Muizzu, clearly showing both countries' strong intent to deepen strategic and economic ties.
