As July 2025 comes to a close, sky watchers can enjoy a rare and breathtaking event. Two meteor showers—the Southern Delta Aquariids and the Alpha Capricornids—will reach their peak together on the night of July 29 and in the early morning hours of July 30. This unique overlap could produce dozens of bright meteors every hour.
Clear, Dark Skies Expected
The moon will be just 27 percent full, which means the skies will stay mostly dark. That makes conditions perfect for spotting meteors. Since this celestial event is visible across the globe, people everywhere will have the chance to witness it—if the weather stays clear.
Why Meteor Showers Happen
Meteor showers occur when Earth travels through trails of debris left behind by comets or asteroids.
NASA says the Southern Delta Aquariids come from comet 96P/Machholz, which orbits the Sun once every five years. On the other hand, the Alpha Capricornids come from comet 169P/NEAT, discovered in 2002, and it completes its orbit every 4.2 years.
Both showers will hit their highest activity just before sunrise on July 30. However, viewers may still see meteors until August 12
How and Where to Watch the Meteor Showers
People in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres can enjoy the show, but those in the south will likely get a better view. That’s because the constellations Aquarius and Capricornus, where the meteors seem to come from, appear higher in the southern sky.
To make the most of the event:
-
Watch just before sunrise on July 30.
-
Stay away from city lights.
-
Pick a dark and wide-open location, ideally facing south.
-
You don’t need a telescope—just your eyes, patience, and clear weather.
Even if clouds spoil the peak night, don’t be discouraged. The Southern Delta Aquariids will stay active until July 31, offering another chance to see shooting stars later in the week.
A Night to Remember
This rare overlapping of two meteor showers under clear, dark skies is a great chance to enjoy the beauty of the universe. Whether you're a serious stargazer or someone who just enjoys nature, this event invites everyone to step outside and watch the sky come alive.
