A massive earthquake measuring 8.7 on the Richter scale struck near Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula on Tuesday. The powerful tremor led to tsunami warnings from both Japan and the United States.

Tsunami Alerts Issued in Japan and US

Shortly after the earthquake, authorities in Japan and the US issued tsunami alerts. The US Tsunami Warning Center released advisories for areas in Alaska and Hawaii. Meanwhile, Japan’s Meteorological Agency warned of potential tsunami waves reaching up to 1 meter (3.3 feet) A powerful 8.7-magnitude earthquake off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula sparked tsunami warnings across Japan and parts of the US, though no injuries have been reported so far.along large parts of its coastline. The agency said these waves were expected to arrive around 0100 GMT.

In a message on X (formerly Twitter), the Japan Meteorological Agency stated, “A tsunami advisory has been issued as of 08:37 (2337 GMT) on July 30,” and added, “tsunamis will strike repeatedly. Do not enter the sea or approach the coast until the warning is lifted.”

Quake Among the Strongest in Years

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred about 136 kilometers (85 miles) east of the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. It struck at a depth of just 19 kilometers (12 miles), making it a shallow earthquake. Shallow earthquakes are more dangerous because they cause stronger shaking and have a higher chance of producing tsunami waves.

Experts described this quake as one of the most powerful to hit the region in several decades.

Minor Damage, No Casualties Reported

So far, no injuries have been reported. Reuters cited early information from Russia’s regional governor, who mentioned that a kindergarten building was damaged. However, there have been no reports of people getting hurt.

The governor also urged people living near the coastline to move to safer, higher areas. He confirmed that the tsunami threat was serious and asked residents to stay alert.

Officials Monitoring the Situation Closely

Authorities in Russia, Japan, and the United States are continuing to monitor developments. They have advised people to follow emergency instructions and stay away from coastal areas until the tsunami warnings are lifted.
