Aftermath Unfolds: Tsunami Hits Russian Shores, What’s the Latest?
A powerful 8.7 earthquake triggered a tsunami near Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, forcing the evacuation of Severo-Kurilsk and prompting safety checks across the region.

A massive 8.7-magnitude earthquake struck off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on Wednesday, July 30. The quake triggered a tsunami that hit the northern Kuril Islands and led to the urgent evacuation of a small town in Russia’s Sakhalin region.

Severo-Kurilsk Residents Moved to Safety

Shortly after the earthquake, the first tsunami wave reached the coast of Severo-Kurilsk, a coastal town located in the Sakhalin region. The town has a population of about 2,500 people.

Sakhalin Region Governor Valery Limarenko confirmed the wave’s arrival and said emergency measures were taken quickly. Authorities ordered all residents to move to higher ground to avoid danger.

“Residents remain safe on high ground until the tsunami threat is completely lifted,” Limarenko said. He added that “all necessary measures are being taken to ensure public safety and restore normal life in the area.”

Emergency Services Respond Quickly

Emergency teams stayed on high alert while residents were being evacuated. Local media shared dramatic videos showing sirens blaring across the town as people rushed toward safer areas. Footage also showed rising water approaching the shoreline.

Though no deaths or serious injuries were reported immediately, some damage did occur. The Alaid fish processing plant in Severo-Kurilsk was flooded. Fortunately, all its workers were evacuated safely before the water entered.

Widespread Tsunami Threat for Kuril Islands

The earthquake was so strong that the tsunami threat extended across the entire Kuril Islands chain. Elena Semenova, who leads the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk seismic station, told RIA Novosti that warnings were issued throughout the region because of the quake’s strength.

Earlier, Kamchatka Governor Vladimir Solodov described the quake as the most powerful in ten years. He also confirmed that inspections were being carried out to assess damage at important public buildings such as schools, hospitals, and kindergartens.
