US President Donald Trump has warned that the United States will soon impose economic penalties on Russia unless Moscow takes steps to end its war in Ukraine. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said the measures could begin within the next 10 days.
Trump Speeds Up Deadline for Russian Action
Initially, Trump had given Russia 50 days to show signs of ending the war. However, he now says that timeline is being shortened. During a meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Trump said, “I’m going to make a new deadline of about… 10 or 12 days from today. We just don’t see any progress being made.”
He confirmed that the US has not received any response from the Kremlin so far. Explaining his decision, he told reporters, “There’s no reason to wait. If you know what the answer is going to be, why wait? And it would be sanctions and maybe tariffs, secondary tariffs.”
No More Talks with Putin Planned
Trump also made it clear that he does not plan to speak again with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Instead, he said the US will take economic action if Russia refuses to cooperate.
He dismissed any concerns about how sanctions might affect global oil markets. Trump said that increased oil production within the United States would reduce the impact of any disruption.
Zelenskyy Welcomes Trump’s Firm Message
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy praised Trump’s statement. He posted on X, “A clear stance and expressed determination by @POTUS – right on time, when a lot can change through strength for real peace… I thank President Trump for his focus on saving lives and stopping this horrible war.”
Earlier, Ukraine had suggested holding a meeting between Zelenskyy and Putin before the end of August. However, the Kremlin rejected the idea. Russian officials said that such a summit should only happen once clear peace conditions are agreed upon.
Russia’s foreign ministry also stated that if Western nations truly wanted peace, they would stop supplying weapons to Ukraine.
Trump Highlights His Global Peace Efforts
President Trump also referred to his past involvement in resolving global tensions. He mentioned helping ease conflicts between India and Pakistan, as well as between Rwanda and Congo. He said his goal is still to promote peace worldwide, even though the conflict in Gaza remains unresolved.
According to the report, some international leaders have even proposed Trump’s name for the Nobel Peace Prize.
