Delta Flight From Salt Lake City to Amsterdam Hit by Severe Turbulence, 25 Hospitalised
Severe turbulence on a Delta flight injured 25 people, forcing an emergency landing in Minnesota.

A Delta Air Lines flight traveling from Salt Lake City to Amsterdam experienced strong turbulence mid-flight on Wednesday. The incident left several passengers injured, and the plane had to make an emergency landing.

Emergency Landing in Minneapolis

The airline confirmed that Flight DL56 was forced to divert to Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport in Minnesota. Medical teams were waiting at the airport when the plane landed safely around 7:25 p.m. local time.

Delta said in a statement, “Flight DL56 landed safely at Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport and was met by medical teams upon arrival.” The airline added that 25 people were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment and evaluation.

Passengers Received Immediate Medical Help

According to an airport spokesperson, firefighters and paramedics from the Minneapolis-Saint Paul Airport Fire Department quickly responded at the gate. They gave immediate medical help to the injured passengers before transporting some of them to local hospitals.

“We are grateful for the support of all emergency responders involved,” Delta said.

Although the exact number of people on the flight is still unknown, a video showing the plane’s landing was widely circulated on social media soon after the incident.

Turbulence-Related Injuries on the Rise

Experts say that serious injuries caused by turbulence are rare. However, some scientists believe that climate change may be increasing these events by affecting the jet stream.

Back in May 2024, a passenger died when a Singapore Airlines flight hit extreme turbulence. That was the first fatality from turbulence on a major airline in decades.
