Vanessa Kirby has confessed that she is a huge fan of Sue Storm, also known as the Invisible Woman. The 37-year-old actress plays the role in Marvel's upcoming film The Fantastic Four: First Steps. She stars alongside Pedro Pascal, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn.
Talking to Variety, Vanessa said, “I’m such a Sue nerd."
Sue Storm's Story Moved Her
She explained why the character means so much to her. Vanessa said that Sue’s journey felt like a symbol of personal growth. In the comics, Sue begins as “Invisible Girl.” Then, after a battle with Psycho-Man, she faces her darker self, known as Malice. After that, she returns stronger and calls herself “Invisible Woman.”
Vanessa found this transformation powerful. “There’s something about meeting the hardest parts of yourself in Malice that felt extremely poignant to me,” she said. She also hopes to play that darker version of Sue in the future. “I’m really hopeful I might be allowed to be Malice at some point for her,” she added.
She Wants to Explore Sue’s Darker Side
Vanessa is especially excited about the chance to play Malice, the darker version of Sue. She shared how Sue had a painful past. Her mother died in a car accident, and her father couldn’t save her. After that, he became an alcoholic and was sent to prison for killing a loan shark. He later died in jail.
Because of this, Sue had to raise her younger brother Johnny. They grew up as orphans and had to survive on their own. Vanessa admired how Sue chose to stay kind and open-hearted despite all the pain.
“What I loved about her was that she chose a path that was inherently a positive one,” she said. Vanessa also mentioned that Sue’s involvement with the Future Foundation wasn’t about politics. Instead, she believed it was just part of Sue’s true nature.
Vanessa Loves Tough Roles
Vanessa once shared that she loves taking on difficult roles. In an earlier interview with TheTalks, she said, “I really like pushing past my limits in that way — I love it.” When a script feels hard to perform, she feels more drawn to it.
She added, “When I read something and go, ‘Uh, I don’t know how I am going to do this,’ then I know I should do it.”
Her Passion Began with Theatre
Vanessa has had a successful career in both theatre and film. She once spoke about how her love for acting began. Born in London, she said she always wanted to act, but she didn’t know how to start.
Her parents loved theatre, especially Shakespeare, and that had a big impact on her. She said, “I grew up with a lot of Shakespeare stories and plays.” She also loved how theatre brought people together.
Vanessa described the stage as a shared experience between the actors and the audience. “With that experience, I felt most connected and most alive,” she said.
