Demi Lovato is back with new music. On August 1, she released a fresh electro-pop track titled Fast, marking her first single in three years. This new release signals a return to her pop roots, after she explored a harder rock sound on her 2022 album Holy Fvck, which featured songs like Skin of My Teeth, Substance, and 29.

Earlier, Demi had dramatically said goodbye to pop music. She posted a photo of herself and her team dressed in black, calling it “a funeral for my pop music.” She even added a cheeky twist by raising her middle finger in the photo. But now, with Fast, she’s celebrating its rebirth. “My pop music coming back to life after we had a funeral for it,” she told fans on social media.

New Album in the Works

According to Rolling Stone, Demi is working on her ninth studio album, which is expected to drop later this year. This upcoming album will see her fully embrace pop again, and she’s creating it alongside songwriter and producer Zhone.

Zhone praised Demi’s energy in the studio, saying, “It’s been so inspiring working with Demi and experiencing her journey of continued leveling up. She is such a master in the studio. This album is about letting inhibitions go, and we had so much fun making this music! It really comes across throughout.”

A source close to the project told the magazine, “Over the past few years, Demi has found love, joy, and newfound confidence, making the choice to approach life with much more lightness and fun. She took this sentiment into the studio, which can be felt in every track.”

Love, Joy, and a New Sound

Demi recently married her fiancé, Jordan ‘Jutes’ Lutes, in May and admitted she’s in a positive place emotionally. This happiness is now flowing into her music.

Speaking to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon last year, Demi revealed she was still shaping the sound of her new album. “It’s true. I’m working on new music. I’m kind of figuring out my sound right now. I don’t know when it’ll come out but it’ll come out when I’m ready,” she said.

When Fallon asked if her new songs were a mix of “happy songs and sad songs,” Demi responded, “I tend to write from the place that I am in in the moment. Because it’s actually been like… it’s been amazing. I’ve been writing nothing but love songs and sexy songs because I’m in this really good place. It feels good to be able to write coming from that place."
