At least 30 passengers were injured after a train derailed near Lahore on Friday evening, according to officials from Pakistan Railways. The accident happened around 50 kilometers from Lahore, near Kala Shah Kaku in Sheikhupura district. The Islamabad Express was on its way from Lahore to Rawalpindi when it derailed.
In an official statement released late Friday night, Pakistan Railways said, “At least 10 coaches of the train have been derailed in Sheikhupura, leaving about 30 passengers injured. Three of them are critical.”
Rescue Operation Underway
Rescue teams quickly reached the scene and began helping passengers. The injured were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Officials also confirmed that a few passengers were still trapped inside the derailed coaches, and efforts were ongoing to safely rescue them.
Fortunately, no deaths have been reported so far. Officials noted that the derailment occurred nearly 30 minutes after the train left Lahore Railway Station.
Government Responds to the Incident
Railways Minister Muhammad Hanif Abbasi responded to the incident immediately. He instructed the CEO of Pakistan Railways and the divisional superintendent to go to the accident site and closely monitor the rescue and recovery work.
Abbasi also ordered a formal investigation into the derailment. He asked that the full findings of the probe be submitted within seven days.
